In case you couldn’t tell by my enjoyment of the Greenpoint Fish and Lobster Co’s oyster boat they had at the Toasted event, I like fresh oysters. Really, I just like great food and that’s what this event looks like it’s going to have.

Background. In 1609 when Henry Hudson entered New York Harbor there was about 220,000 acres or oyster reefs. By 1906 all the oysters had been consumed and the area was no longer good enough for oysters to regenerate. With the Clean Water Act the water quality  has improved so that conditions are ready for large-scale restoration. The goal is to plant 1 billion oysters by 2035. It’s now time to get the restoration started. So how, can you help? You can sign up to volunteer or even easier would be to attend the Billion Oyster Party which goes to benefit the Billion Oyster Project at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. Get a true taste of America’s oyster culture from more than 30 different varieties and meet oyster farmers who are changing the face of sustainable seafood. To compliment the mollusks, top New York City restaurants and chefs fromBrooklyn Crab, Gramercy Tavern, Grand Central Oyster Bar Brooklyn, Oceana,
Saxon + Parole, Lobster Place and Cull & Pistol and more will sample special dishes and NY Distilling Company will serve up Rock and Rye cocktails. Enjoy live music while you venture throughout the indoor and outdoor spaces that local artist Dustin Yellin has transformed into one of Brooklyn’s hippest venues.

Something else that’s cool is that they’re getting schools involved and educating kids about oyster restoration. Classes are adopting oyster beds and taking care of them while performing research on things like water quality and biodiversity.

Prices are not cheap but it’s going to a good cause.
